Obituary:

Mrs. Mary Melton Stables, age 88, of South Hill, died Wednesday October 31, 2018 in her home. She was the widow of Otis Thomas and Calvin Stables. Mrs. Stables is survived by her five daughters: Rachel Swisher of Richmond, Betty Winstead and her husband Dickie of South Hill, Joyce Tharpe of South Hill, Genelle Winstead and her husband James of La Crosse and Janice Kirby of Brodnax. Mrs. Stables was predeceased by her daughter, Connie Clary. She is also survived by her two brothers: Billy Melton of Danville and Bobby Melton of La Crosse; her two sisters: Irene Hendrick of La Crosse and Cleo Chandler of Red Lawn; her nine grandchildren and her many loving great and great-great grandchildren; Mrs. Stables was predeceased by two sons-in-law: Daniel Swisher and Royal Tharpe. The family wishes to thank Mrs. Stable’s five special care givers for all that they did for the family. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday November 3rd at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment to follow in Canaan Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at 6315 N. Center Drive, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502. Online condolences may be sent through www.crowderhitecrews.com. Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Stables family.
