Mr. Gilbert Ravion "Shine" Tolbert
January 17, 1927 - April 6, 2017
Gilbert "Shine" Tolbert received his wings on April 6, 2017. Shine is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Elva B. Tolbert, and four loving children: Betty Hicks of South Hill, Gladys Morris (Timothy) of Kenbridge, Buck Tolbert (Melissa) of Smith Cross Road, and Jeff Tolbert of Brodnax. Shine was blessed with seven grandchildren - Kristal Winstead, Christopher Tolbert, Jim Morris, Brentley Morris, Shannon Hager, Ashley Tolbert, Dani Tolbert, and two great-grandchildren James Morris and Aidan Tolbert.
In addition to being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather Shine was a World War ll veteran of the United States Army, and dedicated most of his life to law enforcement. A charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Shine took oath in 1961 to serve as a Police Officer. Throughout his thirty-three years of service he served as a Police Officer, Assistant Police Chief, and Chief in South Hill, Virginia. Subsequently, he served eleven years as the Animal Control Officer for the Town of South Hill.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Crowder Hite Crews Funeral Home from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Crowder Hite Crews Funeral Home on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with interment immediately following at La Crosse Cemetery with American Legion Post 79 Military Honors. Memorial contributions can be made to Cops and Kids, which is part of the Fraternal Order of Police, and mailed to South Hill Police Department at 103 S Brunswick Ave., South Hill, VA 23970.
