Mr. John Leonard Jorstad, Jr.
September 17, 1935 - May 16, 2017

John Leonard Jorstad, Jr. died Tuesday, May 16, 2017. He was born to John Leonard Jorstad, Sr. and Eleanor Madeline Norem Jorstad on September 17, 1935. John is survived by his wife, Ruth Martin Wright Jorstad, of 34 years, his son John Allen Jorstad (Vickie) of Snellville, GA; his daughters Martha Jean Shephard (Tim), and Sandra Lynn Tignor (Chris) of Richmond, VA. His grandchildren, John Ryan Jorstad (Lindsey) , Cody Crawford Jorstad, Christopher Alexander Tignor and Megan Eleanor Tignor. Also a sister Jean J. Skinner of Montpelier, VA and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Dennis and Davis. John worked for Reynolds Metals Company for 36 years in Research and Development and Recycling and Reclamation. He was a “self-made” metallurgist and was co-founder in the development of an aluminum alloy that is used in aluminum automotive engines around the world. He also served as a global consultant in the metals industry for 25 years after retirement from Reynolds. John was a life member of the American Foundrymen’s Society, receiving the 1994 Charles Edgar Hoyt Memorial and the Joseph S. Seaman Gold Metal Award in 1995. He also received many other awards, wrote man y technical articles, books, and lectured sharing his knowledge of aluminum casting. He was a Fellow of the American Society for Metals; Received the NADCA Achievement Award and other awards from ASTM. He also shared his knowledge of aluminum casting by lecturing at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he was a Board Member at Large of the ACRC and received the Ray Witt Award. His passion was AFS and the most cherished time of his life was spent working with Gary Ruff and Tom Prucha, two outstanding industry leaders. John also served on the Board of Directors for Buggs Island Telephone Cooperative. Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1072 Trinity Church Road, South Hill, VA. on Saturday, May 20, at 11 AM _with interment to follow at Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home Friday, May 19, 2017 from 7PM to 8:30 PM; otherwise at the home, Memorial Contribution may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church, Ephesus Baptist Church, or CMH/VCU Foundation or your choice.
