Gregory Norman Upton

09/08/1965 - 03/17/2019

Gregory Norman Upton, age 53, found rest in his home on March 17th, 2019 after putting up a tough fight with colon cancer. Born September 8th, 1965, he was the middle son of Roger and Catherine Upton.

Greg, a site contractor, loved his job. At age 14 he started working for Castle Heights Construction Company, founded by his father, and eventually owned and operated the company. He took a great deal of pride in his work and the relationships he built through the years, and considered it a privilege to work alongside his Dad.

A lover of competition and the outdoors, Greg enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. While in high school, he played basketball and baseball at Mecklenburg Academy. When his daughters were young, he dedicated the majority of his time coaching Dixie Youth Softball, and taking his daughters to clinics, games, and practices; but also found time for competition bass fishing. Later, his interests turned to predator trapping, and like anything else he set his mind to, he became a master of the craft. In 2011, Greg bought his first fox beagles, and was fully immersed in the world of beagle field trialing from that point on. He loved his dogs and enjoyed the many friendships he made even more.

Greg loved people and their stories, whether they were his doctors or nurses, colleagues, or his friends and family. He valued home and family and soaking up the joy of the little things in life. He and his wife, Wanda, enjoyed a fun and loving partnership for over 33 years. He was nothing short of a hero in the eyes of his daughters.

Greg is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda Thompson Upton; his daughter, Samantha Upton and son-in-law Charlie Schwabe of Richmond, Virginia; his daughter, Bridgette Upton of Fredericksburg, Virginia; his parents, Roger and Catherine Upton; his brother, Bryan Upton and wife Sharon Upton; his mother-in-law, Myrtle House; and in-laws he considered siblings, George Thompson, Myrtle and Hubert Watson, and Anita and Buck Kallam. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews whom he adored. He is predeceased by his brother, Rodney Upton.

Greg was buried at Bethel Baptist Church and a memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 24th at New Hope Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mecklenburg County Cancer Association.
