Mr. John Wesley "Wes" Jones, Jr.

Mr. John Wesley “Wes” Jones, Jr., age 98, of Union Level, VA was born on July 11, 1921 and passed away on May 27, 2020 in his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Bevelyn Glover Jones. He is survived by his two daughters: Theresa J. Shabenas of Bracey, VA. and Elaine J. Stepp and her husband Craig of Apex, NC; his two grandchildren: Christopher Jones and his wife Beth of South Hill, VA and Katherine Bagley and her husband Christopher of Lafayette, IN and his six great-grandchildren. Mr. Jones served proudly in the 358th Regiment 90th Infantry Division serving under the command of General George S. Patton. Mr. Jones takes great pride in the fact that he shook General Patton’s hand. In the midst of the Battle of the Bulge Mr. Jones was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war ended he was reassigned to the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division to guard 13 top war criminals during the Nuremberg Trials. Mr. Jones was the eldest member of the South Hill American Legion Post 79 and a life long member of Zion United Methodist Church, Union Level, VA. He was an electrician by trade but his true passion was wood working. A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Saturday May 30th at 2:00 P.M. in the Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with full American Legion Post 79 Military Honors. Memorial contributions in Mr. Jones’s name may be made to Zion United Methodist Church, att. Will Berry, 3125 Busy Bee Road, South Hill, VA 23970. Mr. Jones was a wonderful man always willing to take time with anyone he met. I first met him when I worked at the Baskerville Post Office, and he always had wonderful stories and trivia to share with me when he stopped by. I have been privileged to call him friend for the last 11 years, and they have been sweet years indeed. He encouraged, inspired, and challenged me every Sunday School class we had together. I will miss him terribly, and I am a better person for having known him. Much love, and deepest condolences from the Berry family.

I thanked your dad and you for guiding me around South Hill. Your dad loved to share our historical stories about family and Zion United Methodist Church. We visited my great-grandfather, C.P. Jones’s house. I would never forgot our memories, fun time, and family visit. I loved your delicious homemade pecan pie! Pray and comfort for all of the family.

Dear Theresa and Elaine,
I speak on behalf of myself, my siblings, and of course your father’s friend and wife, my parents Alphonse and Ethel Menanno in offering you our most heartfelt condolences to both of you and your families.
Wes was one of the most charming and interesting men I ever had the privilege to meet and know. He would share so many historical stories, as well as sharing his love for his wife, Bevlyn, who I personally never got to meet or know.
From the very first time I met him while taking my parents there for a visit, we then built a friendship and continued to speak by phone or letter writing. One of the last packages he sent to me was a beautiful truck he had built in his woodwork shop for me to pass on to my son or if I ever have a grandson one day.
Forever your father will remain a beautiful memory in my heart and mind.

I have not seen Mr Jones in a long time. He was one of the kindest people that I have ever met. To talk to him was always a real treat. I am privileged to have known him
Our Thoughts and Prayers
I was very sorry to hear of Mr. Jones’ passing. I haven’t seem him in many years, but I remember him well. I interfaced with Mr. Jones quite often back when I worked at Electrical Equipment Company and also when I lived nearby in ‘downtown’ Union Level. Mr. Jones was an intelligent man and one of the nicest men I ever met. He will be missed.
Theresa, Elaine and family, I was so sad to hear of your Dad’s passing. I have great memories of our days in Union Level, especially the peach orchard where your Dad taught me how to tell a peach could be picked before it became too soft. Your parents were always smiling and willing to help anyone at anytime.

A Life Well Lived
Papa was an amazing cook! (I still have his potato soup recipe. Yum) He was a lover of nature. He always had his heart in the right place. I witnessed first hand what a generous person he was. He would’ve given the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He loved his family. He was committed to his community. He protected his Country at great risk to himself. He was a precious, well loved man and I know he will be greatly missed. Sending heartfelt condolences to all of his family members!

having been away from ZION for many years I ran into sarge while dumping my trash and he invited me to come to church and I could sit by him if I would be more comfortable. I have been attending ever since. thanks for the memories sarge!
