Mrs. Eileen Cordle Harris

07/17/1937 - 07/29/2022

Obituary:

Janie Eileen Cordle Harris, 85, of Clarksville, VA, fell asleep in Christ on Friday, July 29, 2022, after a
grueling battle with Alzheimer’s disease, having lived an exemplary life of faith in the things
concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. Eileen was a faithful member & devoted
servant of the Berea Christadelphian Chapel in North View, VA, for 46 years, having been baptized into
the saving name of Jesus in July 1976. Eileen was born on July 17, 1937, on her own mother’s birthday. She began her educational journey
early in life by learning to read on her own at a very young age before she started school. Eileen
developed her many talents throughout her life, becoming adept in music, gardening, sewing & hand
crafts, caring for pets & wild animals, as well as becoming a devoted wife, mother, friend and educator.
She was a 1959 Phi Beta Kappa honors graduate of Westhampton College at the University of
Richmond with a focus on a career in journalism. However, she found her true calling teaching high
school journalism. She became a respected educator in many communities across Virginia, teaching
journalism and high school English. Eileen ended her career of more than 30 years as an elementary
school librarian, which may have been her greatest love. She continued to share her love of learning
after her retirement by volunteering at her local library and by tutoring adult GED students until they
passed their GED exam to earn their high school diploma. Sharing her love of learning was her
greatest passion. Eileen is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Edwin H. Harris, Jr.; two children, Mary Kyle H.
Saunders (Harris) of Toano, VA, and Charles E. Harris (Nicole) of North Chesterfield, VA; six
grandchildren, Joseph H. Saunders, Thomas J. Saunders, Rachel N. Harris, Charles E. Harris, Jr., Emily J.
Harris and Daniel A. Harris; one sister, Phyllis C. Kirby of Aylett, VA; and a host of loving nieces,
nephews, cousins, other family and life-long friends. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Thomas Richard Cordle and Janie Roberta Bowles Cordle, and her brother, Richard Carroll Cordle.
A memorial service will be held at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home in South Hill, VA, on Saturday,
August 20, 2022. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 – 3:00 PM, with the memorial service
immediately following at 3:00 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations
may be made to the Virginia Christadelphian Youth Camp (c/o Thom Crabtree, 6029 Spinnaker Cove
Court, Suffolk, VA 23435-3170), Operation Onesimus (c/o James Ross, 106 Middle Post Point, Chardon,

  1. Sisters in Christ

Eileen was a wonderful example of the virtuous woman mentioned in Proverb 31. She was one of the most thoughtful people I ever knew. All members of my family got a birthday card from her every year. If there was sickness, she sent well-worded and personal get well cards. We’re praying for comfort for the Harris family and friends now. Eileen is at peace, asleep, awaiting the return of Christ and the promised resurrection. May we all do so.

  2. A Very Sweet Lady

My deepest condolences to Eileen’s family. Eileen was a very special person. I met her through the Cordle family. She was always a very sweet and kind person. Eileen and her husband were always at the family events. Her kind and gracious presence was always looked forward to. May she find peace in God’s loving embrace.

    Mary Kyle and family,
Sending love and prayers for your family during this difficult time. I have known your Mom for a long time. I first knew her as your Mom, then as our librarian, and as an adult I worked with her as she volunteered at the “Clarksville Library.” She will be missed by many and remembered for her contributions to her community.

  4. Our deepest condolences from the staff of The Burnett Library and Learning Center (Clarksville Library). Eileen was a faithful volunteer and a dear friend. Her illness forced her to give up her time, but her efforts here will never be forgotten.

  5. A lovely sister in Christ

Brother Ed – You and Sister Eileen have been such a powerful influence on those around you. Especially for young people, of which I was once one… God bless you and comfort you.

  6. A great sister

Very sorry to hear this news. I will always remember Sister Eileen very fondly. She was a great lady, and I look forward to seeing her again in the kingdom of God. May God bless Ed, Chuck, Mary Kyle and the rest of her family with peace in that hope.

  7. My condolences to the Harris family for the loss of Eileen. Many years ago, your family hosted a number of us “Operation Onesimus” young people. Eileen was a wonderful, positive and wise mother-figure to me and others. I learned a lot about how families could be by that experience with her and you all. All good. She was a wonderful sister. We’ll see her soon.

  8. Thoughs and prayers for the Harris Family

This is such a wonderful picture. There is no doubt that Eileen was beautiful inside and out!! Sending thoughts and prayers to our dear Brother Eddie and family! My thoughts and prayers for comfort goes out to the Harris family and those whose lives were touched by such a lovely sister. Look forward to seeing you again when Christ’s sets up his kingdom.

“But we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve like other people who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so through Jesus God will bring those who have died with him.”
    (1Th 4:13-14)

  9. Praying for Ed, Mary Kyle and Chuck

On behalf of the faculty and journalism students who knew Eileen at George Washington High School in Danville, Virginia, in the late 1960’s, I extend heartfelt sympathy to Eileen’s family.
I have been missing our lunch dates in Danville the past few years since that terrible disease stopped her from driving to Danville. We have shared many good times together in Clarksville and Danville and I appreciated so much Ed’s bringing her to North Carolina for my mother’s 100th birthday. Eileen was amazing,
May the Holy Spirit comfort you. Treasure those sweet memories — and the fun ones, too. We all will remember her for the special gift she was.

  10. RIP MS EILEEN

No one can prepare you for a loss, it comes like a swift wind but take comfort in knowing that she is now resting in the arms of our lord.We are deeply sadden.May our prayers guide her soul to our heavenly father.Sincere condolences.
