Mr. Wayne Douglas "Doug" Smith

Mr. Wayne Douglas “Doug” Smith, age 83, of South Hill, better known as PaPa, Daddy,Pop, Dugout, Bluebird, Smitty and Mr. Smith, passed away on Monday November 24,2025 outside his home doing yard work. Doug was the owner and operator, along withhis wife Lois, of the Horseshoe Restaurant, Debbie’s Drive-In and South Hill Bus Station for many years as well as a salesman for Electrolux Vacuum cleaners. He started his career as a salesman for Nolde Bread Company. Doug enjoyed hunting and playing golf with his buddies. He loved gardening and was known for his delicious sweet potatoes and fresh vegetables. Doug loved his family and never failed to smile when his wife walked into the room throughout their 62-year marriage. He would often work 14-hour days as a young father and still have time to play catch with his son Dennis. He never missed a ballgame, piano or dance recital, of his children or grandchild. Doug was a sensational athlete who pitched a perfect game in a slo-pitch softball tournament championship game and shot his age during one of his final rounds of golf. Children and animals absolutely loved him and he had an uncanny knack of speaking their language. He was a member of the South Hill Fire Department, First Baptist Church, South Hill Country Club and Rock Hill Hunt Club. Doug is survived by his wife, Lois H. Smith of South Hill; his son, Dennis W. Smith and his wife Shannon of South Hill; his daughter, Kim S. Stoen and her husband Bruce of Durham, NC; his granddaughter, Lexi Smith and her fiancé’ Danny DeMarais; grandsons Chris and Matthew Stoen; his sister, Naomi Andrews of Baskerville; his brother, Willie Bob Smith, Jr. of South Hill; his dear friends, Stan, Betty Ann and Sandy Forbes; his many loving extended family and friends and his beloved pet dog, Booboo. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Bob and Lettie Smith; his two brothers: Herman Smith and Wendell “Jimbo” Smith and his two sisters: Christine Robertson and Patricia Smith. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday November 28th at 11:00 A.M. in First Baptist Church of South Hill, with interment to follow in Crestview Memorial Park.
