Mrs. Annie Farrar Walker
08/27/1932 - 02/26/2026
After a short illness and several years of declining health, Annie Louise Farrar Walker departed this life in faith and fear at VCU Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, Virginia in the early morning hours of February 26, 2026. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Edwin T. Walker, a former teacher, coach, principal, and supervisor for Mecklenburg County Public Schools. She leaves behind her son, The Rev. Dr. Terrence A. Walker of South Hill, Virginia; two extremely close nieces: Sheila D. Watters (Jeffrey) of Midlothian, Virginia and Sandra J. Diggs of Moseley, Virginia She is also remembered fondly
by her extended family, whose love and support enriched her life and brought her joy. During the “dog days” of August, John Lewis Farrar and Mary Lou Hudgins Farrar welcomed their first daughter, Annie, into the world. Little did they know that their baby girl would quietly cross and erase many of the societal barriers of the time and would, in the process, inspire others to strive for excellence, including her
younger sister, the late Dr. Virginia Farrar Diggs.
By age 16, Mrs. Walker had graduated from Mecklenburg County Training School and was earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and English from the former Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. She pursued further studies at Longwood College (University) in Farmville; Virginia State College (University) in Petersburg; and the University of Richmond, where she studied under the renowned educator, Dr. William Glasser of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
Annie Farrar Walker was often labeled “a woman with a purpose.” That description most aptly applied to her productive, 42-year career as an educator and civic volunteer for her native Mecklenburg County. For several years she taught English at the former East End High School but, left in 1969 to teach reading in
Greenville County. A few years later, she returned to Mecklenburg County where her tenacious and unstinting efforts to educate second grade students at South Hill Primary School resulted in a student success rate of 90%. In recognition of her dedication and outstanding service to the students and to the community, Annie F. Walker received the Key to the Town of South Hill. She was cited for excellence
by the Postmaster General for her presentation of a unit on the United States Postal Service, and she was named Teacher of the Year for South Hill Primary School. Other professional achievements include her terms as coordinator for Mecklenburg County’s Young Authors Competition and for the Spelling Bee; Project TEACH Trainer for South Hill Primary School; supervisor of student teachers for Saint Paul’s College, Longwood University, and the University of North Carolina. Among her civic involvements were memberships on the boards of the R.T. Arnold Library and the Revitalization Committee for the Town of South Hill. Since its inception, she has been assistant director of the Theatre SOVA, the children’s
theatre of South Hill; she has also served as director of the Milburn School for Dropouts, a state funded project sponsored through Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1986, Annie F. Walker became one of the five organizers of the Southside Virginia Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. A little more than a year later, she
was formally inducted into the organization as a Charter Member. Her Link activities have included tenures as recording secretary, financial secretary, and corresponding secretary. She chaired the Ways and Means Committee and the Red Ribbon Campaign for Drug Free Schools in Mecklenburg and Brunswick Counties, the largest umbrella project of The Links. Articles citing the success of this campaign appeared in the Panda magazine and in several local newspapers. Not one to omit or to ignore spiritual needs, Annie was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served with distinction in a myriad of capacities. In addition to chairing several standing committees, she was a vestry member, senior warden, treasurer, register, choir member, Sunday school teacher, and sponsor of the noted Rosebuds, a singing group. She was licensed by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia as Lay Eucharistic Minister, Lay Eucharistic Visitor, and Lay Worship Leader. She conducted Noonday Prayer services on Wednesdays, and Morning Prayer services on Sundays, when Trinity needed her.
During the spring of 2007, Annie supervised the merger of Trinity’s after school tutorial and mentorship program with that of the United Methodist Church of South Hill. She was also the Director of the Trinity Community Learning Center. When she could find an unencumbered moment, she enjoyed reading, working
word puzzles and games and listening to jazz. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who visited, called, and offered support to Annie in the months and years leading up to her passing. Your presence,
companionship, and kindness were true blessings, bringing her comfort and peace beyond measure. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the dedicated administration and staff at Pine View Assisted Living Facility for their attentive care and compassion throughout her time at Pine View. The family will receive friends Thursday March 5, 2026 from 6: PM - 8:00 PM at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday March 6, 2026 11:00 AM at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Chapel. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park.

Ms. Walker thank you for your wisdom. You were very appreciated. Condolences to the family and friends rest in peace Ms.Walker.🙏
A Beautiful Soul
I had the good fortune of being a student in Mrs. Walker’s 2nd grade class in 1988-89. To this day she remains my favorite teacher. She was so full of positive energy. Mrs. Walker beamed with joy, and at times sternness. She was stern because she had high expectations for ALL of her students, as every great teacher does. And she loved all of her students. The last time we spoke, a little over 4 years ago, she emphasized how she loved ALL of her students. There was no doubting the love and sincerity in her voice. Mrs. Walker was a radiant woman- stately, smart, warm and beautiful, full of care and compassion. Mrs. Annie Farrar Walker is one of the finest examples not only of what South Hill has to offer, but also of what America and humanity have to offer. My deepest sympathy for her family and friends. Mrs. Walker was a blessing to us all. What a beautiful soul.
Beloved cousin
John L. Hudgins and Rosa Hudgins Abdumalik extend our deepest sympathy to passing of Ms.Walker. She touched so many including us, as cousin, as teacher, as role model, and as frie n d. This world is so much better because she lived in it. As she goes to rest her name will be forever cherished. Thank you is never enough, thank you Terrence and family for sharing her and thanks be to God almighty for sending her.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Rev. Terrence Walker and the entire family. As a former neighbor, student and mentor of Mrs. Walker, I am most in awe of her many contributions to the educational system in this country and through her teachings and Christian walk, in the lives of so many. May the good and gracious God continue to stand with you forever.

In Remembrance
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our cousin, Annie Farrar Walker. Her life was a remarkable example of service, dedication, and quiet strength. For many years, she devoted herself to educating and shaping the minds of children in South Hill, Virginia. Generations of students were fortunate to experience her patience, wisdom, and commitment to helping young people believe in themselves and reach their full potential. Her influence will live on in the many lives she helped guide.
Annie was also the chief historian of the Farrar family, carefully preserving the stories, memories, and traditions that connect generations. She carried that responsibility with pride and care, ensuring that the history of the family would never be forgotten. Because of her efforts, so many of us have a deeper understanding of where we came from and the values that bind our family together.
On a personal level, Annie always inspired me to do my absolute best. She had a way of encouraging others that made you want to rise to the occasion and live up to the standards she quietly embodied. Her words, her example, and her belief in people left an impression that I will carry with me.
Annie Farrar Walker leaves behind a legacy of learning, family pride, and inspiration that will continue to guide all who knew her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this challenging time. May we honor her memory by living with the same kindness, dedication, and strength that she showed throughout her life. May the love of God strengthen the family in this moment in time.
Family, friend, former student
Mrs. Walker, was a great person. I loved when she would substitute for my primary and elementary school classes. She made learning fun. She was always reading to us under the tree during PE. She was a great member of Trinity Episcopal Church in South Hill, VA. Very active within the church and community. Anytime I saw her I would hug her at church, we would talk and she would tell of the times she would teach my class and name students in my classes.
To the family, my condolences are with you during this trying time. God’s love and grace will get you through this. May he continue to hold you all in this hands and wrap his arms of love and protection around you. Look to him and each other for comfort.

We were in NYC last week and just realized Mrs. Walker had passed. My kids loved her as a teacher. I respected her immensely as a colleague. She was so thoughtful and kind and always asked after Stephanie and Drew long after they were grown. What a treasure! Sincere condolences to the family.
