Mrs. Nancy Burton Tetterton
09/21/1940 - 03/06/2026
Nancy Burton Tetterton entered her eternal rest on Friday, March 6 at 85 years old. Nancy began her journey as an educator in 1963, her longest post being as a fourth grade teacher at Buckhorn Elementary in Union Level, Virginia from 1982 until she retired in 2004. Nancy was a hands on teacher who loved making history and literature come alive for her students. Decades later, her former students still remember her reading to them every day and comment on how that was always the best part of the day. That and the fact that her classroom smelled like coffee and crackers (Nancy loved a good Thermos of piping hot, black coffee). She passed her love of reading on to her daughters, with her older daughter spending several years working at the corporate headquarters of Barnes & Noble, and her younger daughter following her into classroom life, eventually becoming an elementary school librarian. Nancy was an enthusiastic lifelong crafter, dabbling in basket weaving, loom weaving, cross-stitch, and in her later years, rug hooking. She loved gardening and was an active member of the South Hill Garden Club in the 80s and 90s. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a professional honor society for women educators. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, M Dale Tetterton, Jr, and her parents, Elwood and Edith Burton. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Tetterton of Richmond and Beth Taylor (Lee) of Hopewell, her sisters Jo Anne Pugh and Debbie Martin, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be at Crowder Hite Crews Funeral Home in South Hill on Saturday, March 14 at 1:00, immediately followed by service at 2:00. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, you consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Rheumatoid Arthritis Association, or Delta Kappa Gamma International. Online condolences may be made through our website, www.crowderhitecrews.com. Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Tetterton family.
