Mrs. Janet Hansen Biedenbender
08/06/1929 - 06/21/2026
Janet Hansen Biedenbender, 96, of South Hill, passed peacefully at home (Roanoke, Va) on June 21, 2026. The eldest daughter born to Barbara and Walter Hansen in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she married her beloved Ken Biedenbender and they built their life raising four children in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, rooted in family, faith, friendship, and community. Affectionately known as “Mrs. B”, Janet had a successful career in accounting. Many throughout the community knew her as “The Avon Lady,” but to those who knew her best, she was much more than that. A devoted member of the Presbyterian church, she found joy in singing in the choir, serving on many committees, and was honored to be ordained as a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church USA in 1988. Together with her husband Ken (a broadcaster and lifelong volunteer firefighter), she served as a lifetime member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary.
In addition to serving the community, Janet had a passion for swimming and traveling with family and friends. She enjoyed knitting and puzzle-making, and treasured her close friendships and memories. She was a trusting friend, caring listener, and gentle presence in the lives of many, who regarded her as the strongest person they knew. The heart and pillar of her family, she created a foundation of love that will continue to sustain those she leaves behind.
She is survived by daughter, Wanda Harris (Terry); grandchildren, Ginger Harris (John), Jill H Nguyen (Matt) Keaton Harris, Zach Martin, and Jamie Biedenbender (Leanne); great grandchildren, Hunter, John, James, and Anna; sister, Joan Peterson of Wisconsin; and many cherished nieces, nephews and family.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Franklin Biedenbender; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy B. Martin (Barry Martin); sons, Kurt W. Biedenbender and Jimmy A. Biedenbender; and sister, Beverly Wellendorf of California.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at South Hill Presbyterian Church at 1:00 PM on July 12th, followed by a reception.
Memorial contributions can be made to South Hill Presbyterian Church at 914 N. Mecklenburg Ave., South Hill, Va 23970, which remained an important part of her life.
