Dr. Newton Byrd Miller

10/22/1946 - 08/31/2024

Obituary:

Dr. Newton Byrd Miller passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024 at his Mecklenburg County home surrounded by his family after a battle with cancer.
He was the son of William R. Miller and Katharine Byrd Miller, brother of Katharine Waring Miller and William R. Miller, III; however, his greatest joys revolved around his children Newton (Ty) B. Miller, Jr. and wife Anita; Katharine (Kit) Miller Bergoon and husband Brent; Whitfield Bell Miller and wife Katie; and Elizabeth Miller Villegas and husband Jason, and their families, especially his twelve amazing grandchildren and five great grandchildren he dearly loved. It is not a cliché to say empathetically that “the Lord threw the mold away” when he created Newt. An amazing and talented artist, composer, musician, actor, championship outboard motorboat racer, high school 3 sport letterman in football, track, with national recognition in wrestling, father, Navy pilot, faithful friend, and so much more. As a much loved and respected Obstetrician and Gynecologist, he delivered so many thousands of children into the world and earned the love, respect, and affection of so many parents from Tidewater to Alaska to Southside Virginia. He and his close friends played, sang, and entertained in numerous night spots from Ketchikan, Alaska to Virginia’s Tidewater and the Eastern Shore to South Hill. It can be successfully argued that nobody since Thomas Jefferson has had as many widely held interests, accomplishments, and talents. He was indeed a “Renaissance man” and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Eastern Virginia Medical School via the EVMS Foundation at EVMS Foundation, P.O. Box 5, Norfolk, VA 23501-0005.
Online condolences may be made through our website, www.crowderhitecrews.com. Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Miller family.

  1. Best on/gyn ever

My one child he didn’t deliver by c-section just sent me his obit. He was so easy to talk to since he was a listener. He understood how unlovely you can feel when you carry huge children. He wasn’t a 15 minute doctor ie. examine and out the door! When my girls grew up he was their gym as well.
He was so good at all he put his talent too.
I even have a video of him delivering my son. He kept my husband from fainting by talking about boat(my husband favorite topic). I’ll love him forever for that alone.

Sympathy and hugs to all family members. What a great guy he was.
I just learned of your passing today Newty. I will miss singing with you and listening to all of the songs you wrote, and stories of the Duck Inn. It was a pleasure knowing you.

  3. Deepest condolences to each member of the Newton Byrd Miller, M.D. family. A glimpse into the past. Newt held court playing his guitar or banjo surrounded by admiring “young adults” (teens) singing along with him to songs of Peter, Paul and Mary, Kingston Trio and other artist of the day. For an encore he might grace us with one of his own humorous musical creations. According to my brother, the same can be said of his counseling days at Camp Greenbriar, W. Va. coaching wrestling to young boys. My father and I attended Newts wrestling matches at Norfolk Academy where he championed his weight class. Our family was very fortunate to share in a part of Newty’s, joy, compassion and music! About two years ago, I
visited with him at his country home in Mecklenburg,
Va.,a blessing! Sending the family, strength and wishing you peace, on the passing of my first true love.

  4. Mrs.

Neetie was in practice with my husband Don. We both loved him dearly he was a great friend and so much fun. He had a special joy in him for his friends and life. During Donald’s illness he came to the house to play and his with his friend and our Bernie . I will always remember his generosity of spirit. rest well in the arms of God Newtie

  5. So sorry to hear the news of Newty’s passing. I was a past employee of his at The Center for OB/GYN’s. I can honestly tell you he was loved by both his patiences and his employees. I loved going to Duck-Inn to hear him play. He had a way with songs like his vegetable song! He truly was one of a kind.

  6. Best next door neighbor ever!

Ty and Kit, you may not remember us but you and your Dad lived next door to us on Inlynnview Road in Southern Points off Great Neck Road. You two were pretty young at the time. There were eight of us kids. Your Dad was the best! Lots of fun, great sense of humor. I think he may have delivered one of my nieces or nephews too.
W are all very sorry for the loss of such a great guy. The Brunick Family

  7. A Loving Friend

Newt was unlike any other man I have ever met and if you knew him you truly understand how unique he was and will forever be. He was a man of many trades, he could play any James Tayler song you could think of or draw you the most creative picture of a whale filled with comics. I had the privilege of being a close family friend of Newt’s but throughout the years he spent as an “honorary member of the Janson family” he formed a relationship with each and every one of us, from my mom and dad to my three siblings. I will always cherish the countless hours I got to spend with Newt and all the life lessons he taught me. No matter what kind of day I was having, a visit to Newts’ would take all my worries away. He was a man filled with knowledge, any situation I faced, I knew he would always have the answers. He cared and loved for his friends and family like no other. He never missed a chance to tell you how amazing you were and how proud he was of each and every one of us. I am so thankful to the Lord that I was blessed to know Newt and share my childhood to young adult years with him, he provided me with a second home I will always be grateful for. I was a classmate of Newty’s at EVMS. All of our lives were enriched by New’t’s friendship, sense of humor, and artistry! Lying Eyes and Country Roads will always be remembered as well as his inimitable drawings of us and the faculty!. RIP , my friend!

  9. Prayers going out to his family!
