Douglas Richard Hoy

Douglas Richard Hoy, 78, of Wake Forest, NC, and formerly of Burlington, NC, passed away at his residence on Monday, August 4, 2025.
A native of Charleston, West Virginia, he was the husband of 54 years to Charlotte Oakley Hoy and the son of Grover C. Hoy, Jr. and Freda Jarrell Hoy, both deceased. His highest level of formal education was Juris Doctorate from Campbell University, Master’s of Administration from Longwood College, and Bachelor of Arts in History at Mars Hill College. Douglas retired as an attorney and practiced law for 35 years. He was a member of the Alamance County Bar Association (2011 President), the North Carolina State Bar Association, and South Hill Lodge No. 297.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Laura Hoy Schwartz (Evan) of Greensboro, NC and Martha Hoy Strick (David) of Wake Forest, NC; grandchildren, Hunter Douglas Bailey of Greensboro, NC, Caroline James Bailey of Greensboro, NC, Elijah Bradsher Strick of Wake Forest, NC, Talia Schwartz of New York City, NY and Jeremy Schwartz of Winston Salem, NC; brothers-in-law, Vernon B. Oakley of South Hill, VA, Woody L. Oakley (Cynthia) of South Hill, VA, and Melvin L. Oakley, MD (Cindy) of Mountain Brook, AL; nieces, Christa, Jennifer, and Amy; nephews, Brad, Matthew, and Will; grand-dogs, Cookie Strick and Rizzo Schwartz.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Vernon and Willie Mae Oakley and sisters-in-law, Betty Oakley and Deborah Oakley.
Services will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. by Rev. David Jackson with the family receiving friends immediately following the service.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Crestview Memorial Park (18599 U.S. Rte 1, La Crosse, VA 23950).

Charlotte, I was so sad to see this obituary. Although we have not kept in touch over the years, I have thought of you and Doug often. Hope your lives were as happy and fruitful as mine and Moose’s. was. Much love and prayers for you and your family.

Doug was a truly nice guy. I knew him by association with the jewelry store he managed in South Hill. He sold me our wedding rings, among other purchases. I know he will be missed by all.
