Phyllis Carter Daw

Phyllis Carter Daw, age 92, of South Hill passed away on Sunday January 19, 2025. She was known to her ballet students at Shannon’s School of Dance as “Miss Daw” and to much of her family as “Nanny.” Phyllis was an extremely talented ballet dancer, acrobat, belly dancer, tap dancer, baton twirler, ballroom dancer, ballet teacher, artist, registered nurse, and writer/poet. She lived an extremely interesting life and loved to travel. She was incredibly sharp, witty, passionate, and had many stories to tell. Phyllis is survived by her five daughters: Deborah Penland of South Hill, Pamela Joy Penland Taylor and her husband Billy of Bracey, Michelle Marie Morrissette and her husband Henry of Bracey, Laura Lynn Penland of La Crosse and Shannon Daw Smith and her husband Dennis of South Hill; her sister, Jacqueline Carter McCleaf of Florida; her six grandchildren: Cassandra Lassiter, Ashley Harrington, Brigham Wilson, Cameron Penland, Walter Wilson and Lexi Smith, and six great-grandchildren: Riley Dustin Wilson, Shelby Lynn Hightower, Elianna Harrington, Lily Lassiter, Marla Hightower and Luca Lassiter. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Mary Carter and husbands Walter Penland and Dr. Albert Lee Daw; sister Doris Thompson and brother Robert Carter. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, January 24th at 2:00 P.M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends starting at 1:00 P.M. until service time in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at 225 N.
