  1. Earl and Elaine,

I’ve started and deleted this message so many times, trying to find the right words. But the truth is, I’m at a loss.

I ran into Logan a couple of months ago at the tobacco shop in Clarksville. It was one of those days—you know, no makeup, hair in a ponytail, baseball cap on—the kind of day you just know you’ll run into someone you know. And sure enough, in walks Logan.

At first, I didn’t recognize him. Then he took off his sunglasses and said, “Come on now… I’m little Earl.” And he sure was. He was the spitting image of his dad, but with the biggest caring heart that he got from his mom.

I was mortified about being in my “hot mess express” state, but Logan just smiled and said, “Looking good, Jess.” He sat down, asked me about my life—how my family was, how my job was going. He even mentioned seeing a picture of my daughter and said how beautiful she is. That’s just who Logan was: someone who genuinely cared. He wasn’t worried about my messy hair or lack of makeup. He had this way of making everyone he talked to feel a little lighter, a little happier, a little more positive about life.

Growing up, your house had a revolving door of teenagers coming and going. You welcomed us all, even though I’m sure us wild kids tested your patience more than once. Logan was always tagging along with us wanting to be right in the middle of everything. He looked up to Nolan so much, and it was clear how much he admired his big brother. I miss Nolan.

My heart is broken for all of you—his parents, his friends, and his daughter. When I saw Logan, he spoke about her with so much love and pride, and I know his memory will live on through her—because, darn if she isn’t the spitting image of both Logan and Earl. I can see Nolan and Logan having reunitied, catching up with a great big bear hug and a lot of laughs.
    I love ya’ll.

  7. Prayers

I remember Logan when he was a teenager playing sports. Logan & my son were friends. I saw Logan maybe 3 yrs ago working in Emporia at Boyd’s. We talked for a few, he was so pleasant, such a good person. It really saddened me to hear this, my son as well. My heart goes out to his entire family.
Hugs prayers to all of you…

  8. With Love

I met Logan when he was a newborn and his older brother, Nolan, a young boy.
Their Aunt Donna took me by their home so that she could visit her sister Elaine and her babes, and I gladly went with her.
Logan was passed from cradled arms to cradled arms as Nolan enjoyed the attention of those who waited to hold his brother.
Learning the names of both boys, I asked Earl and Elaine about Louis L’amour. Earl, like my father and me, was a fan of the Western author, and the two boys shared the names of literary brothers who loved each other dearly.

Elaine and Earl, you have my heart. I am thankful to have that memory, and I pray that your memories bring you comfort and healing.

    Always with love,
    Wendy Waldrep Kidd

  9. We were so shocked, when we got the news. Logan was such a sweet and caring person. Logan would light up a room with his big smile. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Earl and Elaine, and the rest of their families. Logan will be greatly missed.
