Mr. Emmett Burton Matthews

Mr. Emmett Burton Matthews, age 81, of South Hill, passed away on Thursday September 18, 2025. Mr. Matthews was a proud native of Brunswick County who for many years owned and operated his own real estate agency in Lawrenceville, Matthews Real Estate Services; an avid quail hunter; a long time member of the Central Brunswick Ruritan Club, which he joined at the age of 16 on August 1, 1962 and over his 63 years of active membership he held many offices in the club, including President; he was also a long time member of the Green Town Hunt Club and served as its President; he also was a dairy farmer who received many awards for his accomplishments; he was a longtime member of both the Lawrenceville Methodist Church and Prospect Methodist Church in Ebony. He was very active in the Brunswick Dixie Youth League having served as a coach and the Commissioner. He impacted many young people’s lives in his work with the Brunswick Dixie Youth and his most important accomplishment was being a loving husband and dad. Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife, Norma Bishop Matthews of South Hill; his two sons: Marc Matthews and his wife Ann of Lawrenceville and Clayton Levi Matthews and his wife Hunter Payne of Bracey; his three grandchildren: Taylor Thomason and her husband Brad, Payne Steed Matthews and Levi Hunter Matthews and his two great-grandchildren: Tate Thomason and Kinsley Thomason. The family wishes to thank Desiree Kolb and JoAnn Hofler for their loving care of Mr. Matthews. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday September 20th at 3:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends starting at 2:00 P.M. until service time in the funeral home. Burial will take place on Monday September 22 at 11:00 A.M. in Crestview Memorial Park. Memorial contributions in Mr. Matthews’s name may be made to the Central Brunswick Ruritan Club, c.o. Tim Clary, 3495 Liberty Road, Dolphin, VA 23843.
