Mrs. Annie Farrar Walker
08/27/1932 - 02/26/2026
After a short illness and several years of declining health, Annie Louise Farrar Walker departed this life in faith and fear at VCU Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, Virginia in the early morning hours of February 26, 2026. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Edwin T. Walker, a former teacher, coach, principal, and supervisor for Mecklenburg County Public Schools. She leaves behind her son, the Rev. Dr. Terrence A. Walker of South Hill, Virginia; two extremely close nieces: Sheila D. Watters (Jeffrey) of Midlothian, Virginia and Sandra J. Diggs of Moseley, Virginia She is also remembered fondly by her extended family, whose love and support enriched her life and brought her joy. During the “dog days” of August, John Lewis Farrar and Mary Lou Hudgins Farrar welcomed their first daughter, Annie, into the world. Little did they know that their baby girl would quietly cross and erase many of the societal barriers of the time and would, in the process, inspire others to strive for excellence, including her younger sister, the late Dr. Virginia Farrar Diggs. By age 16, Mrs. Walker had graduated from Mecklenburg County Training School and was earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and English from the former Saint
Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. She pursued further studies at Longwood College (University) in Farmville; Virginia State College (University) in Petersburg; and the University of Richmond, where she studied under the renowned educator, Dr. William Glasser of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
Annie Farrar Walker was often labeled “a woman with a purpose.” That description most aptly applied to her productive, 42-year career as an educator and civic volunteer for her native Mecklenburg County. For several years she taught English at the former East End High School but, left in 1969 to teach reading in Greenville County. A few years later, she returned to Mecklenburg County where her tenacious and unstinting efforts to educate second grade students at South Hill Primary School resulted in a student success rate of 90%. In recognition of her dedication and outstanding service to the students and to the community, Annie F. Walker received the Key to the Town of South Hill. She was cited for excellence by the Postmaster General for her presentation of a unit on the United States Postal Service, and she was named Teacher of the Year for South Hill Primary School. Other professional achievements include her terms as coordinator for Mecklenburg County’s Young Authors Competition and for the Spelling Bee; Project TEACH Trainer for South Hill Primary School; supervisor of student teachers for Saint Paul’s College, Longwood University, and the University of North Carolina. Among her civic involvements were memberships on the boards of the R.T. Arnold Library and the Revitalization Committee for the Town of South Hill. Since its inception, she has been
assistant director of the Theatre SOVA, the children’s theatre of South Hill; she has also served as director of the Milburn School for Dropouts, a state funded project sponsored through Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1986, Annie F. Walker became one of the five organizers of the Southside Virginia Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. A little more than a year later, she was formally inducted into the organization as a Charter Member. Her Link activities have included tenures as recording secretary, financial secretary, and corresponding secretary. She has chaired the Ways and Means Committee and the Red Ribbon Campaign for Drug Free Schools in Mecklenburg and Brunswick Counties, the largest umbrella project of the Links. Articles citing the success of this campaign have appeared in the Panda magazine and in several local newspapers. Not one to omit or to ignore spiritual needs, Annie was an active member of Trinity Episcopal
Church, where she served with distinction in a myriad of capacities. In addition to chairing several standing committees, she was a vestry member, senior warden, treasurer, register, choir member, Sunday school teacher, and sponsor of the noted Rosebuds, a singing group. She was licensed by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia as Lay Eucharistic Minister, Lay Eucharistic Visitor, and Lay Worship Leader. She conducted Noonday Prayer services on Wednesdays, and Morning Prayer services on Sundays, when Trinity needed her.
During the spring of 2007, Annie supervised the merger of Trinity’s after school tutorial and mentorship program with that of the United Methodist Church of South Hill. She was also the Director of the Trinity Community Learning Center. When she could find an unencumbered moment, she enjoyed reading, working word puzzles and games and listening to jazz. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who visited, called, and offered support to Annie in the months and years leading up to her passing. Your presence, companionship, and kindness were true blessings, bringing her comfort and peace beyond measure. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the dedicated administration and staff at Pine View Assisted Living Facility for their attentive care and compassion throughout her time at Pine View.
The family will receive friends on Thursday March 5, 2026 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Our hearts are saddened by the passing of Mrs. Annie Farear Walker. May her dedication for education live on in the lives of her many students in Mecklenburg County. She was adamant about making sure her students were prepared to face the challenges of life. Her legacy will live on and her services to the community will forever be remembered. We pray that God will comfort and keep her family and friends. Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. RIP
Mrs Walker was first class! I lived to hear her stories of when she and my Mom were classmates.
