Mr. Virgil Lee Peters

Obituary:

Virgil Lee Peters, age 91, passed away January 13, 2022 at CMH/VCU Hospital in South Hill, Virginia. He is survived by his loving wife Doris. Virgil and Doris were married in Marysville Kansas, December 7, 1952 69 years ago (he never wanted to forget their anniversary). Surviving children are his daughter Susan (Rick) Carroll of South Hill, sons Stanley (Laura) Peters of Pensacola FL and Scott (Terrie) Peters of Chester, VA. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was recently predeceased by his granddaughter Shelbie Lynn Peters (age 37) of Chester, VA. and his beloved sister Kathleen Combow Grishaber. He loved his little dogs Sugarman and Sadie Sue. He so enjoyed his long-term caregiver Sandy Hall of South Hill. She made him laugh and lifted his spirits each day. Virgil was a Navy veteran having served in the Korean War on the USS Shannon. He enjoyed many of the ship’s reunions over the past years. After the Navy, Virgil began his career working with the Union Pacific Railroad in Marysville, Kansas as well Omaha, Nebraska, and Ogden, Utah. In 1965 he moved his family to Balboa, Canal Zone in Panama. He worked with the Panama Canal Company Locks Division as an electrician, Control House Operator, and retiring as Senior Lockmaster with responsibility for locking ships through the Miraflores Locks. While in Panama, he was an active member of the Masonic and Shriners Lodge. As an active member of the Balboa Lodge, rising to the position of Master mason. While in the Canal Zone, he volunteered with the Boy Scouts, Rainbow Girls, Eastern Star and the VFW all while in the Canal Zone. He was also a member of the Balboa Union Church, serving at the crossroads of the world. Virgil retired in 1982, and moved to Marysville, Kansas where he and Doris renovated the Butler family farm where they lived for 12 years. He enjoyed reading, history, and taking his family on many trips across the United States. Then in 1994, Virgil and Doris decided to moved to South Hill, VA to be closer their children. Virgil worked at Wal Mart serving as their electrical, basic handyman, and all-around jokester. He became a member of the local American Legion and volunteered at The Hundley Center and local Breadbox. He loved humor and enjoyed making people laugh. He will be missed by all his family and friends. The words of remembrance that are written above really show that he was a man who embraced life with humor and took on challenges with confidence. With those good graces I’m sure he will stay in your hearts with a strong impression that will last a lifetime. We will keep you all in our thought and prayers.

    Thank You Daddy for such a fantastic childhood. We were so blessed by you moving us to The Canal Zone, Panama. You have supported me and guided me all the way through. I will honestly miss you!

    I am saddened to hear of Virgil’s death. Doris, I certainly will be thinking of you and so sorry I won’t be able to see you because of all the Covid around. You will definitely be in my thoughts and prayers. Susan and Rick; I will also have you and your family in my prayers. Love you all and know that God will watch over you in the months ahead without him.
