  1. A Treasure

We became got to know Sarah in Richmond and stayed in touch over the years after moving away. She was so creative, so generous, so funny! Never a dull moment. I miss her stories.

  2. Sarahs' Friend of Ridge Elementary

My heart is almost stopped when I saw this obituary. I had been reaching out to Sarah via email about our annual Pumpkins for Pigs drive at the school. Sarah sent me photos of animals around the farm that she knew would make my days brighter and told me of the adventures and mishaps of farm life.
Sarah and Alan have inspired my Suburban Ridge Elementary school for over a decade. We encouraged our students to bring pumpkins to school after Halloween so that they could be fed
to Sarah’s beloved rescue pigs. Each year the media would come to videotape or photograph the event of our young children loading up all of the jacko lanterns onto Alan’s truck. It was a joy to connect their farm to our school. Sarah knew that it was an important and effective way to connect the students to recycling, farming, and kindness to people and animals.
Sarah was amazing and dependable. I have always looked forward to our reunions in November and I am devastated to learn of your passing Sarah. Alan, my heart hurts for you. Please accept my sincere apologies for not being there for her funeral. My deepest condolences to you Alan. Please let me know if I can do anything for you. You are in my prayers.

  3. I'll Miss You, Friend

I knew Sarah for more than 25 years, and she was truly one of a kind!

I learned so much from her, especially looking at small details that most overlooked. We would go into the forest, and she would point out a small flower or plant I would never have noticed. From my friendship with Sarah, I’ve learned to look at the world through her eyes.

She was also a very caring person who thought of others and loved animals, rescuing dogs and several pot-belly pigs. I think she would have had a small zoo if not for Alan’s objections.

I will miss the hours we spent on the phone talking about our latest interests and updates of our lives. Alan would ask what we are were talking about for hours, Sarah would reply, “nothing.” We would continue for another hour because she cared about me — and I knew Alan cared about Sarah to let her catch up with his friend on the West Coast even if it would be for hours at a time.

Sarah will be sorely missed, and I will always treasure our special friendship forever.

    With Love,

    Wayne Kitchen

  4. I was fortunate to meet Ssrah at the thrift shop
She was alot of fun to work with. We had many laughs together. I’m glad we kept in touch. I will miss her funny posts and her friendship. RIP Sarah. My condolences to her husband Alan

  5. I was very saddened to hear about Sarah, my dear friend of 35 years. She was our next door neighbor, realtor (we bought and sold our homes through her), teacher of life experiences to our daughter and a helpful and caring woman. She drove to Nags Head from Richmond to pick us up when our car broke down and back to Richmond in one day. I will miss our conversations and funny experiences. My family’s deepest condolences to Alan, who also shared many of those experiences. Sarah, I will like you for always and love you forever.

  6. High school friend

I am sad to hear about my friend! We had so much fun at Park View and later visiting at our colleges. She was funny, smart, and so cool! Her Mom was too! Later she and Alan helped us with our first houses! I wish we had talked more lately. She and Alan were married first and longer than anyone I knew. RIP, Sarah. Alan, stay in touch,
    Nina and Marc Lebow
