Charles John Mayer, born April 24, 1928. Died October 30, 2023. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Agnes Baisey Mayer (1996), his parents, Carl and Josefa, brothers Walter, Frankie, Conrad, John (Hansie), George and Howard, and sister, Irene. He was born and raised in Bronx, NY and moved to South Hill, VA with his family in 1940. After sadly losing all 6 brothers at young ages to a rare kidney disease, Charlie had to drop out of school to help support the family. He started working for the Army Corps of Engineers as a surveyor during the construction of the John H Kerr Dam and Reservoir. In 1950, he was drafted by the Army during the Korean War and served as Sergeant First Class for 2 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 79 and celebrated 71 years in 2023. In 1952, he started working at South Hill Motor Company, a boat and tractor dealership at the time. With the new Buggs Island reservoir, selling and repairing boat motors soon became his focus and he was well-known across the state for his skill. He married Agnes Baisey in 1954. In addition to working at South Hill Motor Company, Charlie retired as a Sergeant with the Virginia Department of Corrections with 15 years of service. He remained at South Hill Motor Company, buying the business in 1988 and later moving it to a garage at his home on U.S. 1-N, peacefully situated off the highway. He retired from the boat business well into his 80 ’s. Charlie lived to celebrate his 95th birthday, surrounded by family. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday November 2nd in Crestview Memorial Park. All those wishing to pay their respects are invited to the family home on Thursday, November 2nd from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M.. The family requests in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to the Southside Rescue Squad at P.O. Box 546 South Hill, VA 23970, or to the charity of your choice.
