Edgar Eugene "Gene" Evans, Jr.

Obituary:

Edgar Eugene “Gene” Evans Jr. passed away on October 9, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to education and athletics. He is survived by his children, JD Evans, Kimberly Evans Sasser and spouse Gene Sasser, and Lori Evans and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gene was a talented guitarist and singer, starting in his teens and continuing throughout his life. Gene devoted over 40 years to education and sharing his love of sports and outdoors. Nine years to Ferrum College, and the director Physical Education for Brightpoint Community College (formerly John Tyler Community College). He served in multiple roles including Athletic Director, head coach for baseball, basketball, and club volleyball, assistant football coach, head trainer, and Director of Intramural Sports. His contributions were instrumental in shaping the college’s athletic and intramural programs. A proud member of the 1965 Ferrum College National Junior College Football Championship Team, Gene was deeply committed to his alma mater. In 1966, he received the Ferrum College Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Higher Education, honoring his significant impact in the field. Throughout his career, Gene earned numerous accolades, including being named Outstanding Recreational Specialist by the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and receiving the esteemed Pioneer Award. He was also recognized nationally as both an Outstanding Educator of America and an Outstanding Outdoor Education Instructor-Consultant. Gene was an avid outdoorsman, taking great joy in hunting, fishing and simply being out in nature. Gene Evans will be remembered for his passion for sports, his commitment to education, and the many lives he touched through his work and mentorship. A memorial service will be held Saturday October 25, 2025 at 3:00 P.M. at LaCrosse Methodist Church.
